Inside Z-Frame: When & Why to Use It

An inside Z-frame is fitted within the window recess, with a visible lip overlapping the front edge of the opening. It creates a crisp framed finish and is particularly useful when you want the shutter to look neatly integrated with the window.

For the order, the Z-frame sits mostly within the recess, so only the front lip projects into the room by approximately 10mm. That lip can also help conceal small gaps or slight irregularities around the edge of the opening.

How does a Z-frame mount to my window?

The fixing section of the Z-frame is secured inside the recess while the front lip overlaps the wall or architrave. Use our current frame-profile diagram for the exact dimensions and confirm the usable recess depth is clear of window hardware.

Can I install a Z-frame with an architrave?

Yes, if the shutter can be inside mounted and there is enough flat surface for the front lip to sit neatly. Z-frames work particularly well with square and bullnose-style trim.

Can I install a Z-frame with a window sill?

Yes. If the sill protrudes into the room, the bottom of the shutter frame is configured to finish on top of the sill rather than wrapping around it.

Installing a Z-frame with obstructions

As you work through the guide, window winders, handles, locks and screens must be checked before choosing an inside Z-frame. The important measurement is the clear depth between the front of the recess and the furthest obstruction. This should be at least 60mm.

If the obstruction reduces the available space, it may still be possible to use a Z-frame by positioning rails or a midrail strategically.
