Which Windows Can Take Plantation Shutters?

Plantation shutters can be fitted to a very wide range of windows because the frame, mounting method and panel layout can be adapted to suit different openings. The main limitations are usually clearance, window operation and the availability of a secure fixing surface.

Inside or outside mount?

Inside mounting places the shutter within the recess and gives a clean recessed appearance. It works best where there is sufficient clear depth in front of the window and its hardware.

Outside mounting positions the shutter in front of the opening and is often the solution for shallow recesses, square-set openings or windows with hardware that prevents an inside fit.

Z or L-frame?

For this step, an inside mount can use a Z-frame or inside L-frame, while an outside mount uses the outside L-frame. The most suitable option depends on the recess, architrave, sill and any obstructions.

Window winders, locks and handles do not automatically prevent shutters being installed. Their location needs to be checked so the frame, rails and louvres remain clear and the original window can still operate.

Run the tape from the front of the recess to the furthest part of the winder or handle. Where hardware sits near the top, bottom or centre of the opening, a fixed rail or midrail may sometimes be positioned in front of it.

If there is not enough space for an inside mount, moving the shutter forward with an outside frame is usually the simplest alternative.

How many panels?

Large windows can still use plantation shutters by dividing the opening into multiple panels. The panel divisions should ideally align with the main vertical sections of the window and stay within the permitted manufacturing widths.

At this stage, our ordering page makes choosing the right panel layout simple. Plantation shutters are made up of individual panels, so wider windows can be divided across multiple panels rather than being limited to a single shutter.

For the order, for windows wider than around 950mm, more than one panel will generally be required. Individual panels can be made up to approximately 900mm wide, with the surrounding frame adding a little extra overall width. This makes plantation shutters a practical option for large windows as well as smaller openings. Double hinged shutters will be approximately half of this.

When planning a large or unusual opening, also consider where each panel will swing when opened and whether furniture, walls or adjacent windows will interfere.
