Window Sills & Shutter Fit Explained

A window sill is the ledge at the bottom of a window that projects further into the room than the other sides of the opening. It is different from the window recess, although a window can have both.

Look at the window from the side. If the bottom edge extends further into the room than the top and sides, treat it as a projecting sill when planning your plantation shutters.

The sill matters because the bottom of the shutter frame may need to finish on top of it. For example, a frame that overlaps the side and top edges of the opening cannot simply continue down over a sill that projects forward.

Identify the sill before taking your final measurements so the correct bottom-frame arrangement can be allowed for.
