Planning Your Shutter Panel Layout

The best plantation-shutter panel layout usually follows the architecture of the window rather than fighting against it.

Overview

Where possible, align the vertical edges of the shutter panels with the vertical mullions or divisions already visible in the window. This helps the shutter feel like part of the window and keeps the view through the louvres visually organised.

Panel width is a balance between functionality and proportion. Wider panels create fewer vertical interruptions, but very tall shutters can sometimes look better when divided into narrower, more balanced sections.

Also consider how the panels will open. Furniture, taps, benches and adjacent walls can affect the most practical hinge direction. If there are several acceptable layouts, select the one that best aligns with the existing glass and window-frame divisions.
